Film Review:- ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana’

Laugh Out Loud ====> 3/5

Even before the release, Yamla Pagla Deewana (YPD) got lots of +ve buzz because of
1. one of the best promos in recent times,
2. all 3 Deols coming together & that too in a comedy film instead of action film.

Honestly I wasn’t sure if the movie will able meet the expecations raised by excellent promos. But YPD is entertaining & a paisa vasool movie. Director Sameer Karnik has very effective used both onscreen & offscreen images of Deol family. An he makes it clear that all these ‘over the top’ comedy scenes are intentionally added & not forced into script.

The first half of the movie is just okay, which is about NRI (Sunny Deol) from Canada comes to Banaras in search of his lost Father-Brother((Dharmendra-Bobby) who are local thug.
But it is the 2nd half which is main reason why this film is worth watching. Unlike many films that lose interest in 2nd half, YPD gains momentum post interval as all characters arrive in Punjab. And how Sunny/Dharam are trying to help Bobby Deol to get his love interst (Kulraj Randhawa), & that girl has some 5-6 funny-crazy brothers(Anupam Kher, Mukul Dev..) who are opposed to marriage…because they want only an NRI Jiju from Canada. There are many hilarious scenes & situations in 2nd half.

Had the editing team done a better job in the 1st half, YPD could have been very much better. Nevertheless, it is still entertaining & watchable due to 2nd half.
Another big +ve about YPD is it is rare Hindi film which we can watch with entire family….no foul language, no double meaning dialogue, no vulgar scene….just pure family entertainer.

Performance :- Sunny Deol & Anupak Kher are excellent. Dharmendra, Mukul Dev, Jonny Lever are also good in their limited role.

Music :- Very weak & those item songs in the 1st half of the movie are boring.

But despite being unnecessarily lengthy, bad music, the movie manages to sustain interest with some genuinely hilarious moment.
Go for it.

    I read the review as soon as you posted your first status in facebook but was skeptical of how can a Deol trio’s movie be good (last they appeared together in Mere Apne). Without watching a movie one can only judge a movie by performance of previous movies (which I did, and most professional reviewers too do).

    Just read a couple of news that movie is doing exceptionally well despite bad reviews (naturally preset mindset). A thumbs up to your true review. Keep writing. As I wrote earlier, you already have one reader. I don’t get time to watch movies (last movies I saw were Avatar and A Wednesday that too in the last month — wide gap between release and watching)
